Astraeus, ' Aven called out. 'God of the four winds and friend to sailors. Say a little prayer when you look at him, so he will give us what we need to keep our course.' A little prayer?' said Jack. 'To a constellation?' To what it represents, ' said Aven. But I don't believe in what it represents, ' said Jack.Prayers aren't for the deity, ' said Aven. 'They're for you, to recommit yourself to what you believe.' Can't you do that without praying to a dead Greek god?' Sure, ' said Aven. 'But how often would anyone do that, if not in prayer? . About This Quote

Jack has a very strong belief in God. He believes that God exists and he believes that prayers do work. But, Jack is very skeptical about the best way to make those prayers happen. He thinks that all of the superstitions surrounding prayers are just a bunch of hooey.

One day, Jack's ship is in a storm and his compass has stopped working. Jack calls out to his friend Astraeus, but he doesn't know if his friend Astraeus even exists. Jack decides that he'll pray to this imaginary friend, so he does so.

It turns out that Astraeus is real! In fact, Astraeus helps Jack's ship to stay on course and makes sure that his compass works again.
